This piece seems to have been misunderstood. Shortly after the September, 11 attacks on the United States my best friend, Heidi Holt, and I, had many long discussions about the country, the state of the world and about ourselves.
I finished this piece and called it dual-911. the name signifies that there are differences in the world that we all cannot recognize. Some people have one way to deal with the differences while others react in a totally different way.
If there is one thing that we hope that was learned through the terrible events on 911 is to trust and protect the people that we love while respecting and accepting the differences of others. When you look at this piece we urge you not to think of the violence and hate in the world, but to remember the
old western saying "I've got your back, partner."
I had many request by neighbors in the area to please cut the guns off the sculpture, because they symbolized violence. but I refused. The guns to me, signify the danger that is still out there in the world whether we want to acknowledge it or not.
To me the guns symbolize protection and readiness, and not the promotion of violence.
