Phoenix 1Season in HellThis piece is a study of friendship and my explorations of the emotions that govern it. There is nothing in this life or beyond that can break the bond of true friendship. The season in hell was one of pain and suffering, Not only my own, but the hardship of watching someone close go through it. 1998 was a tough year. My Friend Stan and myself were both having serious health problems. Stan was an all around great guy, he was a true friend in every sense of the word. Stan was a logger in the foothills of Western Maine, a real 'modern day lumberjack.' He was the kind of man who was almost impossible to fool and there was nary a puzzle that he could not solve. He had a way of seeing the reality in just about everything. When Stan died, those who were closest to him sent some personal items with him on his final journey. We all felt strongly that Stan appreciated the fact that we did. Several days later, I noticed light bulbs burning out two to three at a time. This went on for a few days and I had a strong feeling that it was Stan. A few days passed and I was talking with some other of his close friends and relatives. Many of them said they were experiencing the same sort of oddities. I finally spoke with my father and told him of the situation. My father simply asked me, "did you give Stan any gifts when you said goodbye?" "Yes, we all did," I replied. My dad offhandedly said "Well he's trying to thank you for the gifts, tell him he's welcome." So we did, and the oddities ended. Stan had no fancy college degree, but graduated life with high honors. Rest in peace my friend -Stanley P. Wilson November 23, 1941 to Oct 18, 1999 |
